Design

15 minutes

I started with drawing out my shape in Sketchup then made it into a component and exported an SVG using the plug-in Fabber.

Easel

I imported the SVG into Easel Pro and checked the parameters

Starting the Carve

I mounted the MDF to the spoilboard and started the carve using a 1/4" upcut spiral bit.

Mounting the template and Blank

With the template cut, I mounted it to my blank stock which I used Curly Soft Maple. I used double sided woodworking tape.

Cutting close to the line

30 minutes

With the template and blank together, I cut off most of the waste at the bandsaw then refined my lines even more at the sander. Then I headed to the router table to flush trim the blank to the template and drilled out the hole in the pommel at the drill press with a 1 1/8" forstner bit which is the O.D. of a piece of 1" copper pipe. I cut the pipe with a metal cutting bandsaw but an angle grinder, hacksaw, or pipe cutter would also work.

Sanding and Chamfering

15 minutes

I sanded it all up to 220 grit and added a chamfer to the edges. Then I set up my logo file in Easel and changed the bit for a 45 degree v-carving bit and carved the logo into the board.

Finishing touches

15 minutes

With the board basically done, I added a coat of mineral oil/beeswax I make in house. I cut a thin piece of leather and tied it to the hole of the pommel. Done!
